The Northeast india region is occupied by different types of ethnic and indigenous tribals community. this region is a hub of amazing cultures and tradition, lifestyles that is very unique from rest of the India and also the world. 

there are more than 200 different indigenous tribal living in the Northeast region with their own unique culture and traditions , languages and dialects. 

Different ethnic community or a group of people resides in their own specific states, districts or an Autonomous region of its own.

1. Nagaland.

Nagaland is a Tribal state, the indigenous Tribes found in Nagaland are called Nagas. 

The Naga Tribes are:-

2.Manipur.

Manipur like the other state of Northeast India, the state is occupied by both Tribal and Non-Tribal indigenous community.

Tribal communities of Manipur are Nagas and Kuki. and the non tribal community are Meitei (Manipuri).

The Naga Tribes of Manipur are:

-Chiru

-Kharam

-Liangmai

-Mao

-Maram

-Maring

-Paumai

-Tangkhul

-Zeme

-Thangal

-Anal

-Chothe(Also classified as Kuki-Chin)

-Anal (also classified as Kuki)

The KUKI tribes of Manipur.

The Chin people of Myanmar and the Mizo people of Mizoram are kindred tribes of the Kukis and are collectively known as the Zo people. 

In Manipur Kuki tribes comprise around 30% of the population and mainly reside in the hills.

The Kuki Tribes are:

-Kom(historian considered them linguistically a kin to Chin-kuki-Mizo group)

The Meitei Non Tribal community of Manipur.

The Meiteis are divided into seven salai or clan;

-Mangang

-Luwang

-Khuman

-Angom

-Moirang Kha

-Ngangba 

-Sarang Leishangthem.

Meiteis also called Manipuris are the most numerous of all the ethnic group in the state and largely inhabit the fertile Imphal valley that sits at the centre of the state.

Meiteis were originally a set of four different tribes:

-Khuman 

-Luwang

-Moirang

-Meitei.

3.Assam.

In the Northeastern state of Assam a Diverse tribes like 

-Bodo

-Kachari

-Karbi

-Miri

-Mishimi

-Rabha 

-Lalung

-Dimasa

-Nagas

co exist in Assam. most tribes has their own language through Assamese is the principal language of the state. 

A majority of the Assamese are Vaishnavas(a sect of Hinduism).

Most Bengalis in Assam Brahmaputra valley are immigrants from neighboring Bengal region and Tripura, 

while, Bengalis in Barak valley region of Assam are mostly native. 

4. Mizoram.

The Mizo people which also called Lushai Mizo hnam. are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group native to the Indian state of Mizoram and neighboring regions of northeast india. 

they are related to Chin people. the term Mizo covers several related  ethnic group or clan inside the mizo group. 

Mizo comprise of 5 major tribes name:

-Lushei

-Rate

-Hmar

-paihte

-pawi (or Poi). 

And other 11 minor tribes known under the common name Awzia. 

5. Arunachal Pradesh. 

There are more than 26 tribes in Arunachal Pradesh with more than 100 sub-tribes 

Out of which the most prominent and principal tribes are. 

-Adis

-Apatanis

-buguns

-Hrussos

-Singpos 

-Mishmis 

-monpas

-Nyishis 

-sherdukpens

6.Meghalaya.

Meghalaya is domanited by Three major tribes, 

-The Garo

-The Khasi

-The jaintia 

Under these three major tribes, each tribes has a number of sub-tribes. 


The Garo resides in the region called Garo hills, The Khasi resides in the east and west khasi hills and the jaintia predominantly resides in the jaintia hills of Meghalaya state.

7.Tripura.

Tripura is one of the cultural rich heritage state in the Northeast India. 


Tripura has a 19 different tribal communities, these communities are:-

-Tripura/Tripuri 

-Riang

-jamatia 

-Noatia

-Uchai 

-Chakma 

-mog

-Lushei 

-kuki 

-Halam 

-munda 

-kaur 

-Orang 

-Santal 

-Bhil

8.Sikkim.

The people of Sikkim consist of three major ethnic groups namely:

-Lapcha 

-Bhutia 

-Nepali 

There are many sub group and clans among these three main ethnic group of people. 

Largest tribe in Sikkim. 


 The Rai is the single largest community in Sikkim followed by the Chettris. 

Among the schedule caste, kami is the largest community followed by Damai and Sarki.

The community with lowest population in Sikkim is Dewan followed by thami.
